What is AIvy?

AIvy is a Windows app that keeps a 3D character on your desktop and lets you talk with it using AI.

It reads VRM files, so you can load a model you bought on a storefront such as BOOTH, one you made yourself in VRoid Studio, or one distributed on VRoid Hub, and keep a character you like on screen.

For the voice, AIvy connects to external TTS software (VOICEVOX, AivisSpeech, VoiSona Talk, and others), so you can pick the voice you want.

Unlike a typical AI chat app that waits for your input, AIvy speaks to you first. You can set the interval between those messages to any value, and you can set up automatic muting so it stays quiet during calls, games, and similar situations.

The language model used for conversation runs on your PC (built on llama.cpp). Apart from being passed to the LLM to generate a reply, your conversations are never sent anywhere.

The UI is available in 11 languages, including Japanese, English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), and Korean.

AI language model

  • Local inference
    Built on llama.cpp. The AI conversation runs offline.
  • Choosing a model
    On first launch you pick a model from the in-app list and download it. The list is limited to permissively licensed models such as Apache 2.0 or MIT, so it is safe to use for streaming and video production.
  • Bring your own GGUF
    GGUF files obtained elsewhere, for example from Hugging Face, also work: put one in the designated folder and choose it from the list. There is no size cap, so large models will run if your PC can handle them.
  • Cloud LLM — paid DLC: AIvy Cloud LLM unlock
    Set an API key you issue yourself for OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini and DeepSeek. The key is encrypted and stored in the OS credential store, using Windows DPAPI. Even on a PC that cannot comfortably run a local LLM, a cloud model keeps the conversation smooth.

Voice

    Alongside your OS’s built-in TTS, AIvy works with VOICEVOX, AivisSpeech, Sharevox, VoiSona Talk, and Piper TTS.
  • Lip sync
    The character’s mouth moves in time with the speech.

Character customization

  • Loading VRM models
    Works with models you bought, models you made yourself in VRoid Studio, and downloads from VRoid Hub.
  • Outfit swapping (beta)
    Load .unitypackage outfit assets, the format sold and distributed on storefronts such as BOOTH, and put them on your model.
  • Appearance tweaks
    Texture swapping, expression mapping, and per-part visibility.
  • Per-model display settings
    Save lighting (ambient and directional intensity, direction, color) and the default idle expression for each model.
  • Idle motion and camera
    Choose an idle motion preset and adjust the camera angle.

Everyday features

  • Alarms
    At a time you set, the character tells you in its own voice rather than with a notification chime.
  • Calendar
    Subscribe to an iCal (.ics) URL to get reminders for upcoming events and a rundown of today’s and tomorrow’s plans. No OAuth account linking is required.
  • Article recommendations
    Suggests web articles based on interests that came up in conversation (works, products, people), software you launched recently, and your region. Your reaction after reading, whether a like, a not-for-me or a short comment, teaches it your tastes and which sources to favor, and shapes the next suggestion. Ask for an article it suggested before and it will open it again. Each of the 11 languages has its own local RSS sources, so you get news from outlets in your own country. The feature is off by default, and remembered words and software can be reviewed or deleted in settings.
  • Load monitoring
    Tells you when CPU and other PC resource usage goes past a threshold you set.

On screen

  • Click-through
    The clickable area matches the VRM model’s silhouette, so AIvy does not get in the way of your work. You can also make it fully click-through.

Privacy

  • Everything stays on your device
    Conversations, summaries, and interest data are all stored on your PC.
  • Speech recognition
    Microphone input is transcribed on your device, and the audio is never sent anywhere.
  • Screen information
    AIvy does not capture screenshots or any other image of your screen. It reads only text such as window titles and process names.
  • Features that use the internet
    Article recommendations, calendar, language and voice model downloads, and the cloud LLM DLC.

Languages

UI and subtitles are available in 11 languages (Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Italian). Voice availability depends on the TTS engine and the OS.

Network

The AI conversation and speech synthesis run offline. Article recommendations, calendar, model downloads, and the cloud LLM DLC require an internet connection.

A message from the developer

AIvy started as something I wanted for myself. There is no shortage of AI chat apps, but most of them only answer when you speak to them first, and that always left me with a faint sense of talking to a wall. I thought an app that spoke to me first would be interesting, and that is how the project began.

What I put the most work into is memory. Remembering past conversations and carrying them into later ones. Not forgetting what you and AIvy have talked about, and building on it. I believe AIvy has achieved something close to the way familiarity grows between people, which is not a number you can put on a screen.

The everyday features are another thing I cared about: the calendar, load monitoring, article suggestions matched to your tastes. Having a companion of your own that helps out a little, rather than only making conversation, is an experience other AI chat apps do not offer.

And so that you can talk to AIvy without holding back, it is a local app with no servers of its own. Apart from being passed to the LLM to generate a reply, your conversations are never sent anywhere.
